Conservation

Conservation is a state of harmony between men and land. By land is meant all of the things on, over, or in the earth. Harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left. That is to say, you cannot love game and hate predators; you cannot conserve the waters and waste the ranges; you cannot build the forest and mine the farm. The land is one organism. Its parts, like our own parts, compete with each other and co-operate with each other. The competitions are as much a part of the inner workings as the co-operations. You can regulate them—cautiously—but not abolish them.

The outstanding scientific discovery of the twentieth century is not television, or radio, but rather the complexity of the land organism. Only those who know the most about it can appreciate how little we know about it. The last word in ignorance is the man who says of an animal or plant: “What good is it?” If the land mechanism as a whole is good, then every part is good, whether we understand it or not. If the biota, in the course of aeons, has built something we like but do not understand, then who but a fool would discard seemingly useless parts? To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering.

Mi impelago in una tanto ardita quanto inadeguata traduzione, a beneficio (spero ) dei non anglo-disinvolti: i cultori dell’anglosassonica lingua mi perdonino. 

La Conservazione è uno stato di armonia tra gli uomini e la terra. Con “terra” si intendono tutte le cose su, sopra o nella terra. L’armonia con la terra è come l’armonia con un amico; non puoi avere a cuore la sua mano destra e tagliare via la sua sinistra. Questo è per dire che tu non puoi amare la selvaggina e odiare i predatori; non puoi conservare l’acqua e non coltivare i campi; non puoi costruire la foresta e minare la fattoria. La terra è un organismo. Le sue parti, come le nostre parti, competono le une con le altre e cooperano le une con le altre. Le competizioni sono parte del suo funzionamento interno e delle cooperazioni: puoi regolarle, con cautela, ma non abolirle.
 
L’eccezionale scoperta scientifica del XX secolo non è la televisione, né la radio, ma piuttosto la complessità dell’organismo Terra. Solo chi più conosce di più sulla terra può rendersi conto, invero, di quanto poco la conosciamo. L’ultima parola dell’ignoranza è rappresentata dall’uomo che dice di un animale o di una pianta: “A che serve?” Se il meccanismo della terra nel suo complesso è buono (giusto), allora ogni parte è buona, sia che noi la comprendiamo, sia che non.  Se il biota (essere animale o vegetale, ndr), nel corso degli eoni (mezzo miliardo di anni o più, ndr), ha costruito qualcosa che ci piace ma che non comprendiamo, allora chi, tranne uno sciocco, potrebbe eliminare le parti che appaiono inutili? Conservare ogni ingranaggio e farlo girare è la prima precauzione di un armeggiare intelligente.
